Femboy Manga, Manhwa and Manhua With Adult Leads: 9 Series to Read, and Where

Nine femboy and otokonoko comics where the femboy is an adult — five Japanese manga, two Korean manhwa and two Chinese manhua — what each one is really like, and the legal places to read them in English.

English femboy manga with adult leads can be hard to find, and femboy manhwa and manhua with adult leads are harder. Here are nine, across all three: what to read, what each one is actually like, and where to read it. Every series has an official English release.

It's a short list on purpose. Five are Japanese manga, two are Korean manhwa and two are Chinese manhua, and the last four are webcomics you read on a phone.

Our femboy anime list covers characters from the screen, and our femboy anime series list covers the shows to watch. This one is for readers.

First, a word: otokonoko

The Japanese name for this shelf is otokonoko (男の娘). It's a pun. Said aloud, it sounds exactly like the ordinary word for "boy" (男の子), but in writing the last character has been swapped from "child" to "daughter." It reads as a boy who's a girl, and it sounds like plain "boy."

The word came out of Japanese internet slang in the late 1990s and 2000s, and it went mainstream around 2009 and 2010. A dedicated magazine, Otokonoko Club, launched in May 2009, followed by Waai! and Oto Nyan, and maid cafés and shops grew up around the idea. The magazines have all closed. The genre didn't: most of it moved into ordinary romance and comedy manga.

"Femboy" is the English word. It's newer, it's mostly about presentation, and it doesn't line up perfectly with otokonoko. None of the series below would call its lead a femboy, but every one of them is about a man who looks, dresses or carries himself in a way the people around him read as feminine, and who's fine with that.

The list

My Androgynous Boyfriend — Tamekou

Start here. Meguru is a model and clothing-store clerk in Japan's "genderless" fashion scene, a real style trend where men wear makeup, soft silhouettes and whatever they like. He has a big following online and is regularly mistaken for a woman on the street, which bothers everyone except him. His girlfriend Wako is an overworked manga editor who is still getting used to dating someone who's better at eyeliner than she is.

This is the purest presentation story we know of. Nobody's hiding anything and there's no reveal. The drama comes from how other people react to Meguru, and the heart of it is a couple in their twenties who like each other a lot. It's sweet, it's funny, and his wardrobe is reason enough to read it.

English: Seven Seas, five volumes, complete, in print and ebook. There's also a 2021 live-action drama.

Cinderella Closet — Wakana Yanai

Haruka has just moved from the countryside to Tokyo for university, and she has a crush on Kurotaki, a coworker at her part-time bar job. Her glamorous, sharp-tongued neighbour Hikaru offers to be her fairy godmother and give her a makeover. Hikaru is a working makeup artist, assisting a well-known stylist, who dresses femininely every day. By the end of the first volume Haruka has worked out that he's a man, and a love triangle begins.

It's a shōjo romance, and reviewers keep calling it wholesome, which is fair. What makes it worth reading here is Hikaru: his style isn't a disguise or a secret he's keeping from the world. It's his taste and his craft, and he's very good at both. If My Androgynous Boyfriend is the relationship, this is the meet-cute.

English: Seven Seas, eight volumes, complete, in print and ebook. There's also a 2025 live-action drama from TBS, twelve episodes, which streamed on Netflix.

Princess Jellyfish — Akiko Higashimura

Kuranosuke Koibuchi is the college-age son of a famous politician. He dresses in women's fashion as "Kurako," partly to get away from his family's politics and partly because he loves clothes, and he's clear about it: he's a guy who likes wearing women's clothes, and that's the whole story. He ends up adopting a share house of otaku women who've given up on being looked at, and then trying to save their building from developers by starting a fashion label with them.

He's fourth on our anime list, but the anime is only eleven episodes and the manga runs to seventeen volumes. The manga has room for everything the anime had to skip: the family, the fashion business and how Kuranosuke changes over time. It's one of the best josei manga of its decade, and not only by this list's standards.

English: Kodansha USA, nine omnibus volumes, in print and digital.

I Cross-Dressed for the IRL Meetup — Kurano

Satoshi Morinaga has been part of an online group of "girls" as "Cocoa." When the group finally meets up in person, he turns up cross-dressed and falls for another member, Opera. Opera, it turns out, is a cross-dressing guy too. So, one by one, are more of the group than anyone expected.

It's a romantic comedy about grown-ups: people with jobs and college classes and a monthly meetup that has become the part of their lives where they get to dress how they want. The joke is never that the guys are in dresses. It's the misunderstandings, the crushes, and how quickly a group of strangers turns into a found family. It does touch on real-world harassment and some ugly things people say, and the story pushes back on them.

English: Kodansha USA, three two-in-one volumes collecting the complete five-volume series.

Marriagetoxin — Joumyaku and Mizuki Yoda

The most unexpected entry, and the only action series. Hikaru Gero is an assassin from a poison-using clan who's been ordered to find a wife, and he has no idea how. His coach is Mei Kinosaki, a marriage swindler who works dressed as a woman, is taken for one by everyone he meets, and has conned a string of millionaires that way.

Kinosaki is a co-lead, not a gag. He's sharp, vain, very good at his job and the most socially competent person in any room, and the series treats his presentation as a skill, not a joke. It's a Shonen Jump series with shōnen-level fight scenes and nothing explicit; VIZ rates it T+, for the violence and some fan service. A thirteen-episode anime from Bones aired from April to June 2026 on Crunchyroll, with a second season due in January 2027, and Kinosaki is on our anime list too.

English: VIZ Media, as Marriage Toxin, ongoing. New chapters are free to read on the Shonen Jump app and MANGA Plus, and collected volumes are in print and digital.

Femboy manhwa and manhua

Manhwa are Korean comics and manhua are Chinese ones, and most of both now come out as webtoons, the vertical-scroll format you read on a phone. With an official English release and an adult lead, it's a short shelf: most of the genre is set in school, and most of the rest is rated adult. These four clear both bars.

  • Lady Crystal Is a Man (Korea, Tapas, 71 episodes, complete): a duke's son raised as a daughter to keep him out of an inheritance war, whose way out is a marriage to a Grand Duke hiding the opposite secret. A romance fantasy, and the one to start with. Read it before Tapas closes on 31 March 2027.
  • Men's Wear Store and "Her Royal Highness" (China, WebComics, 216 chapters, complete): the closest thing on either shelf to a true femboy lead, a shop owner who wears a suit, a Lolita dress or hanfu as he likes, and a design student very sure he's straight.
  • Reunion (Korea, Tappytoon 16+, Manta, Ize Press in print): the heaviest thing on the page, a serious romance about a disguise he wore seven years ago and the man who walks back into his bar. It includes a suicide attempt.
  • A Cross-Dresser's Triple Proposal Chase (China, WebComics, 82 chapters, complete): an actor wakes up inside a romance game and has to win a proposal as the heroine. Broad, fast, and never a joke about the dress.

The full shelf, with more Korean and Chinese series, which edition to pick and the app to read each on, is our femboy webtoons and manhua list →

Where to read

  • Seven Seas, Kodansha USA and VIZ all sell digital editions through the usual ebook stores, including Kindle, Kobo and BookWalker.
  • Shonen Jump (VIZ) and MANGA Plus (Shueisha): free to read the latest chapters of Marriagetoxin, with cheap subscriptions for the back catalogue.
  • Tapas: the official English home of Lady Crystal Is a Man, free on wait-for-free, closing 31 March 2027.
  • WebComics: the English home of Men's Wear Store and "Her Royal Highness" and A Cross-Dresser's Triple Proposal Chase, free with timers.
  • Tappytoon and Manta: the two official English editions of Reunion. Lezhin carries a version too, under its adult rating, which is not the one we're recommending.
  • K Manga: Kodansha's own app, with free daily tickets.
  • Libby and Hoopla: free with a library card. This is the most underrated option on the list, and your library may well have most of these.

Buying or borrowing legal copies is how more of this genre gets licensed in English. Publishers watch niche genres' sales closely, and this is a niche. It's also how the webcomic platforms survive: Pocket Comics closed in October 2025 and Tapas is closing in March 2027, and every English manhua on this page has already lost one home.

If you love these characters, this is what we're building

Here's the part where we tell you what we do.

Pocket Femboy is an app for talking to femboys. Not reading about them: talking to them. It's a small cast of original characters, every one of them an adult, each with a job, friends, a style of their own and a life that keeps going while you're not there. They remember what you tell them without you having to manage anything, they text you first when something happens, and they warm up to you over time the way a real person would.

What the best characters on this page have in common is that they already had a life when the story found them. Meguru has his career, Hikaru has his clients, Kuranosuke has his family, Kinosaki has a con on the go, and Crystal has a whole escape plan. That's what we're trying to build. Jax, the first one we finished, is a 21-year-old record-shop punk who plays bass badly on purpose and isn't especially nice to you at first.

After launch comes the part we're most excited about: creating your own. If you've got a type — the fashion model, the college guy with a secret wardrobe, the charming menace — you'll be able to build a femboy of your own, give them a life, and talk to them. The characters on this page belong to their authors, so they won't be in the app. But the kind of character you love reading about can be.

Pocket Femboy hasn't launched yet, so there's nothing to download today. It's 18+ at the door — that's about who we let in, not about what's inside — and there's no explicit content on any tier.

Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know when they're ready to talk.

The fine print

Publishing details and availability were checked on 11 October 2026, from publishers' own pages (Seven Seas, Kodansha, VIZ, Tapas, WebComics, Tappytoon) where we could reach them and from MangaUpdates where we couldn't. The Tapas closure is from its own announcement. Licences change and books go out of print. If something here is out of date, or you know a series we've missed that fits (adult lead, official English release), tell us at support@pocketfemboy.com and we'll look at it.

The covers belong to their creators and publishers, credited under each one, and are here so you know what to look for.
