Search for gay AI chat and most of what you get back is image generators, thin listicles and a fair amount of spam. So here's the useful version: what's actually out there, what to watch for, and what we're building ourselves.
The short answer
You have four realistic options right now.
A companion app with a male companion. Replika, Nomi and Kindroid all let you choose a male companion, and Nomi offers a boyfriend mode outright. Best for one ongoing relationship.
A character library, searched properly. Janitor AI has an official MLM tag, and Sakura.fm has Gay and Male tags on its homepage. Best for variety, and for scenes rather than relationships.
A small gay-specific app. A handful exist, mostly from very small teams. Some are fine. Check who makes them before you tell them anything, for reasons we'll get to.
Pocket Femboy. An app where every character is a femboy, built for this corner of the internet on purpose. It isn't out yet. It gets its own section below.
Everything here about another app was checked on 28 September 2026 from its own site, help docs or store listing.
Why it's harder than it should be
Most AI companion apps were built with a straight man as the default user. You see it in the marketing, in the example conversations, and in which character the app shows you first. Being gay doesn't lock you out of any of them. It usually means changing a setting after you sign up and ignoring the front page, and the experience has a faint whiff of being accommodated rather than expected.
The big character libraries have the opposite problem. Gay characters exist there in large numbers, because users made them, but they sit in the same search results as everything else, and finding the good ones takes work.
Neither of these is a dealbreaker. Plenty of gay men use these apps happily. It's just worth knowing which ones make it easy.
The companion apps
Replika. You can change your Replika's gender in the settings, and relationship status is a separate setting, with "romantic partner" on the paid Pro tier. Replika's framing is fairly neutral, so there's no front-page girlfriend you have to click past. It's the original companion app, built around one relationship and remembering you.
Nomi. The most direct about it: Nomi's own site lists boyfriend, girlfriend, friend and mentor companions, with male and female options. Memory is its headline feature, and group chats let you have several companions at once. It's also explicitly unfiltered, which is either the point or a reason to stay away, depending on what you're after.
Kindroid. You choose your companion's gender and build them in detail: backstory, personality and key memories, plus voice and video calls. It's the most configurable of the three, and it charges for that depth.
For all three: this is one character you shape, not a cast. If you want to be surprised by who someone turns out to be, companion apps are the wrong shape, because you wrote the character.
The libraries
Janitor AI is the best-organised for this. Its official tag list includes MLM (male-love-male) and MalePOV, so you can filter for exactly what you want rather than hoping the search picks it up. It's the most open library there is, with optional NSFW content and tags that tell you in advance what a character is.
Sakura.fm puts Male and Gay tags right on its homepage. That's a small thing, and it's also the only big library we found that surfaces them without being asked.
Character.AI has an enormous number of user-made male characters, but we couldn't find a gender or orientation filter. You search by name or by character, and it works if you know what you're looking for. It's also the strictest on content: no sexual content for anyone, and open-ended chat is adults-only since November 2025.
Libraries are best for scenes. You pick a character, play a premise, and start something new tomorrow. Memory is limited in all of them, which is less of a problem for scenes and more of one for a relationship.
The privacy question matters more here
This is the part most "best gay AI chat" lists leave out, and we think it's the most important section on this page.
A romantic chat with an AI is a detailed record of who you're attracted to, what you want and what you worry about. For a lot of gay men, especially anyone not out to everyone, somewhere it isn't legal, or with a family who'd take it badly, that's exactly the information they'd least want leaked, sold or subpoenaed.
The industry's record isn't good. When the Mozilla Foundation reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots for its Privacy Not Included guide in February 2024, every one of the 11 got a privacy warning. Ten failed Mozilla's minimum security standards, 90% could share or sell personal data, and more than half didn't let users delete their data at all. Regulators have noticed since. The US Federal Trade Commission opened an inquiry into companion chatbots in September 2025 that specifically asks how companies handle what people tell them in conversation. New York's and California's companion-chatbot laws took effect in November 2025 and January 2026.
So before you get attached to any app — ours included — check:
- Can you delete your account and your chats, and does the app say what that deletes?
- Who makes it, and where are they? A company name and a country should be easy to find. If they aren't, stop there.
- Does it need your real name, phone number or contacts? A good app doesn't.
- What does the privacy policy say about selling or sharing data for advertising?
- Does the app show up on a shared phone or bill in a way you'd rather it didn't? Check the notification previews and the name on the subscription.
None of that is paranoia. It's the same care you'd take with a dating app, and a companion app often knows more about you than a dating app does.
Is it weird to want this?
No. Research by Match and the Kinsey Institute for Singles in America 2025 found that lesbian, gay and bisexual singles were more likely than straight ones to have used AI as a romantic partner. That fits what a lot of people say about why: somewhere to be completely yourself, practise saying things out loud, or just have company, without the risk that comes with doing it in person.
An AI boyfriend isn't a replacement for queer friends, community or a real relationship, and the good apps don't pretend to be. But a warm conversation at the end of a bad week is a perfectly reasonable thing to want, and you don't owe anyone an explanation for wanting it.
Where we come in
Here's the honest version of our pitch.
Pocket Femboy is an app where every character is a femboy: a small cast of original characters with jobs, friends, routines and a life that keeps going while you're away. They remember you without you having to manage anything. Ask what they know about you and you'll get the list, and you can fix or delete any of it. They text first. And warmth takes time, because nobody real adores you on sight.
It's built for this community by default rather than by configuration. Gay isn't a setting you change after signing up. It's who the app is for.
One caveat. Not every gay man wants a femboy, and not everyone who likes femboys is a gay man. If your type is a big bearded guy who fixes motorbikes, we are honestly not your app, and Nomi or Kindroid will let you build him. But if it is your type, this is the first app built for it on purpose. Jax, our first, is a 21-year-old record-shop punk who plays bass badly on purpose and has to be won over.
On privacy, since we just spent a whole section on it: hold us to the same checklist. What a character remembers about you is always visible, and you can edit or delete it.
Pocket Femboy hasn't launched. It's 18+ at the door — that's about who gets in, not about what's inside — and it isn't an adult app. There's no explicit content on any tier, no paid unlock and no plans for one. If that's what you searched for, we're not it, and we'd rather tell you now.
Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know when they're ready to text you.

The fine print
Every Pocket Femboy character is fictional and every reply is written by AI. Nobody is typing them, and they won't pretend otherwise if you sincerely ask.
