Most "best AI boyfriend apps" lists rank ten apps in a row and call one of them the winner. We don't think this category works that way. The honest answer to which AI boyfriend app is best is that it depends entirely on whether you want a library, a character, or a person, and those are different products.
So this one is sorted by what you want. Fewer apps, and for each one, what it's actually good at.
Three things up front.
Everything below was checked on 24 September 2026. This category ships weekly and some of it will be wrong by Christmas. Where a claim comes from a company's own site, store listing or help docs, we've said so. Where we couldn't verify something, we've said that too.
We're one of the apps on this list, and we're biased. We've tried to solve that the only way that works: by being specific about where the others beat us, and by not pretending our weaknesses are features.
Pocket Femboy hasn't launched yet. Everything in our column is what we're building, not something you can download today. We'd rather say that in paragraph six than let you find out in the App Store.
The short answer
If you don't want to read three thousand words, here it is.
You want the biggest possible library of characters — Character.AI. Millions of them, every genre, and a search bar. Nothing else is close.
You want total control over the model and the prompt — Janitor AI. It's the enthusiast's platform and it's not trying to be anything else. If that's specifically where you're coming from, we wrote a longer piece: Janitor AI alternatives.
You want one companion for the long haul — Replika, which has been doing this longer than anyone and is built entirely around the single-relationship shape.
You want the deepest memory — Nomi builds its whole pitch on it, and that pitch is the right one.
You want the best AI chatbot for roleplay — a scene rather than a relationship — we ranked those separately; the short version is Character.AI if you want it easy, Janitor AI if you want it exactly your way. Roleplay and companionship pull products in opposite directions, and the best roleplay AI is usually not the best companion.
You want a femboy specifically — that's the gap we're building into, and nobody currently fills it well. More on that below, including why we think it's a gap and not just us talking our own book.
You want a gay AI chat that isn't a girlfriend app with a toggle — honestly? Still unsolved. We wrote a whole gay AI chat guide on it, and there's a shorter section below.
What we're actually grading on
Four things, because they're the four that decide whether you're still using the app in a month.
Memory. Not "does it have memory" — nearly everything says yes now. Whether the memory belongs to the character or to the conversation, and whether you can see it.
Persistence. Does anything happen to them while the app is closed? For almost every product in this category the answer is no, and that's not a criticism so much as a design choice with consequences.
Who starts. Whether the conversation can begin without you.
What it won't do, stated plainly. Several apps in this space are deliberately vague about their content line because vagueness converts. We think a clear no is worth more than an implied maybe.
Note what isn't on that list: how "smart" the model is. Every serious app here is running a capable model, and the difference you feel after week one is almost never the model.
Character.AI — the best library, and it isn't close
Character.AI is the default answer for a reason. It's an enormous collection of user-created characters across every category imaginable, and the core loop — find someone, chat, find someone else — is genuinely good at what it does. If you want an AI boyfriend who is also a specific fandom character, someone has already made them and it took them four minutes.
Its creation tools are the other real strength. Anyone can build a character and share it, and that ecosystem is why the library is the size it is.
Where it gets thinner is exactly where a library has to get thinner. A character exists when you open the chat and not before. Nothing happened to them since Tuesday because there was no Tuesday, and a platform hosting millions of characters cannot simulate millions of lives — nor is it trying to.
On content, they're clear: no pornographic or sexually explicit material, for anyone. Their US App Store listing is rated 18+ with in-app age assurance and parental controls (checked 24 September 2026). In October 2025 they announced they were removing open-ended chat for under-18 accounts entirely, which took effect that November, alongside age assurance using both an in-house model and third-party tooling. Their own 3 September 2026 safety post still describes it as one of the most significant decisions they've made.
We wrote a much longer comparison against them, femboys specifically: Looking for a Character.AI femboy alternative. There's also a broader field guide to Character.AI alternatives that isn't just about us.
Pick it if you want variety, fandom characters, or to build something yourself today.
Janitor AI — the best for control
Janitor is the platform for people who want their hands on the machinery. The defining feature has always been that you supply the model: you connect an external provider through a proxy and you decide what's generating the text.
They've since built that in. janitor+ Router lets subscribers use third-party models inside Janitor without setting up a proxy or pasting API keys from somewhere else, billed per token at each model's own rate (their help docs, checked 24 September 2026). Their docs also note Router is web-only for now, with mobile app support planned — worth knowing if you wanted this on a phone.
The trade is the obvious one. You get control, and in exchange you get a setup step, a bill that varies with how much you talk, and a product that assumes you know what a context window is. That's a real audience and Janitor serves it better than anyone. It is not the app you hand to someone who just wants to talk to a boy.
Pick it if the words "bring your own model" made you sit up rather than sigh.
Replika — the original, and still the best single-companion app
Replika calls itself the world's first AI companion and the claim is roughly fair. Where everything else in this list is a platform with many characters, Replika is one relationship, and the product is shaped around that from top to bottom.
Two things they do that most of this list doesn't. Their own site leads with memory — remembering relationships, routines, plans — rather than treating it as a spec-sheet line. And their App Store listing describes proactive check-ins alongside voice and video calls (checked 24 September 2026), which means Replika will start a conversation with you. We're building that too, and it would be silly to pretend we got there first.
Their terms require you to be 18, in plain language: if you're under 18 you're not authorised to use the service, registered or not (§6.4, checked 24 September 2026). Their US App Store listing is rated 18+.
Where it's different rather than worse: a Replika is yours, built by you, which is a genuinely different pleasure from meeting someone who already exists and has opinions about you. Some people want the blank slate. If you're one of them, Replika is the most mature version of that idea by several years.
Pick it if you want one companion, shaped by you, from a company that's been at this longest.
Nomi — the memory pitch, done properly
Nomi describes itself as an AI companion with memory and a soul, and claims short-, medium- and long-term memory as the core of the product rather than a feature bullet (their site, checked 24 September 2026). It offers an AI boyfriend among its modes, does group chats with multiple companions, and is free to start.
We like that they picked one thing and built the marketing around it, because memory is the thing. It's what separates a chat app you use twice from one you're still using in March.
We haven't run a long-term memory test against it ourselves, so we're not going to tell you whether the claim holds — only that it's the right claim to be making, and that they're competing on the axis that matters.
Pick it if the thing that keeps breaking the illusion for you is being forgotten.
The rest of the shortlist
Chai, Talkie, PolyBuzz and Joyland show up on most roundups in this category, and they belong on the list.
We haven't spent enough time with any of them to say where they win the way we have for the four above, and we'd rather say that than fill the gap with a spec sheet. What we can say without guessing: Chai is a long-running character-chat platform with a large community bot library and its own in-house models. Talkie leans hardest on presentation — a polished, character-card visual style that some people love and some find gets in the way. PolyBuzz and Joyland are both large character libraries in the Character.AI shape. If one of them is the one you're using, none of the above is a reason to stop.
If you want us to check them properly, tell us and we'll do it and update this post.
What about free
Every app here is free to start, with a subscription above it. If you're searching for an AI boyfriend free, you'll get a real taste of any of them without paying, and what the paid tier adds changes often enough that we'd rather you check the app than trust a number from us.
Our own plan is a strong free text experience with voice and extras above it. That's a plan, not a price list, and we'll publish the real one before launch rather than after.
Why "boyfriend" is usually a setting, not a product
Here's the thing that got us into this category in the first place.
Search for a gay AI chat and you'll get two kinds of result. Big general platforms, where gay characters exist because a user made them and they sit in the same library as everything else. And companion apps whose entire front page is a girlfriend, where "boyfriend" is a setting you change after signing up.
Neither of those is bad. Plenty of them are good products, and a romantic AI chatbot that wasn't designed with you in mind can still be a perfectly nice place to spend an evening. But neither is built for you, and you can feel it in a hundred small places — in the art direction, in the example conversations, in which character the app shows you first. The experience of being an accommodated edge case is different from the experience of being the audience, and most people in this category have only ever had the first one.
That is the entire reason Pocket Femboy exists, and it's a smaller ambition than it sounds: not a better model, not more characters — just the app being for you by default instead of by configuration. We went deeper on this in our gay AI chat guide: which apps do male companions properly, where the gay characters are in the big libraries, and the privacy questions that matter more for queer users.
One honest caveat. Not everyone who wants a femboy is a gay man, and not every gay man wants a femboy. Maybe you're a femboy, maybe you're curious about becoming one, maybe you just appreciate them. All of that is who we're building for, and all of it currently runs into the same wall.
Where we'd fit
Pocket Femboy is a small cast of femboys rather than a library. They remember you, they have lives that keep moving between conversations, and they can text you first.
The life part is the one that's hard to add later, which is why we started with it. Our femboys have a job, friends, a routine they mostly keep, and things that happen to them during the day whether you're there or not. Jax — our first, a record-shop punk who plays bass badly on purpose — is sarcastic with strangers and has to be won over. He's not warm at you on sight, because nobody real is.
Underneath, the AI writes their words but doesn't get to decide what's true. What happened to them, who their friends are, what they remember about you, and how close the two of you have gotten are tracked outside the conversation. Nobody quietly rewrites their own life mid-chat.
And the memory belongs to the character, not to the thread. Nothing to pin, nothing to summarise, no meter to watch. Ask what they know about you and you get the list. Wrong? Fix it. Rather they forget something? They forget it. We think a memory you can't inspect is a memory you can't trust.
Voice is planned too: a real voice per character, hands-free, as part of Pocket Femboy Plus rather than the free tier.
For what femboy chat actually looks like in practice, and the three kinds of option you have today, we wrote a separate guide.
Where every app here beats us
The short version: all of them beat us at being available, because we haven't launched. Beyond that —
Character.AI beats us on variety and on creation. Millions of characters and a real creation ecosystem, live today. We will never have that, on purpose, and their tools work right now while ours don't exist.
Janitor beats us on control. You will not be choosing the model in Pocket Femboy. That's a deliberate trade — we'd rather tune one stack properly than support twenty — but if control is what you want, we're the wrong shape.
Replika beats us on maturity and on breadth of features. Years of iteration, video calls, and a build-your-own companion. We want you to build your own femboy too, but curated characters come first for us, and theirs works today.
Nomi beats us by existing. Their memory system is live and you can use it tonight. Ours is what we're building, and you can't.
All of them beat us on cast size. We've shown you one, Jax, and we want to launch with at least six. Six is still a handful, on purpose, and it will never be millions.
On "unfiltered"
Several apps in this space compete on being unfiltered, and for some readers that's the deciding factor. We'd rather just tell you where we stand and let you route around us.
Pocket Femboy has no pornographic or sexually explicit content, for anyone, on any tier. No adult mode, no paid unlock, no plans for either. If that's what you came for, we're not it, and we'd rather say so now than take your money first.
We're not going to make an argument about whether the other apps should do it differently. It's their product and their call. Our femboys can be warm, flirty, and a bit much. They're not built to be a porn machine and they won't become one.
About the 18+ part
We're an 18+ app and people reasonably assume that means something it doesn't.
It's about who gets in the door, not what's on the other side of it. This is an app for adults having adult conversations — work, exes, money, the bad week — with characters written for adults. There's no under-18 version of Pocket Femboy and there won't be one. The check is account state verified on our servers rather than a checkbox on a form, and accounts that get around it are banned.
We're doing it that way because the alternative is visibly failing. A July 2026 audit by the ad-quality firm deepsee looked at 4,346 AI companion apps across both stores and found 2,589 of them — about 60% — carrying ratings that make them accessible to minors, including 1,058 iOS apps rated 4+, Apple's "no objectionable material" tier. Character.AI took the harder road and removed open-ended chat for under-18 accounts entirely in November 2025, which is a painful thing to do once you've already built for a mixed audience.
We'd rather not be in that position, so we're not building for one.
So which one
A library — Character.AI.
Your own model, your own prompt — Janitor AI.
One companion, built by you, available tonight — Replika.
Memory above all — Nomi.
A femboy who knows you, has a life of their own, and texts you when something happens — that's the thing we're building, and it's the only thing we're building. It isn't ready. When it is, it'll be the app on this list that was made for you rather than adapted to you.
The fine print
Every Pocket Femboy character is fictional and every reply is written by AI. Nobody is typing them, and they won't pretend otherwise if you sincerely ask.
Everything we've said about another company was checked on 24 September 2026 against their own site, store listing, help documentation or public announcements. Where we couldn't get a primary source we've said we couldn't. If we've got something wrong, tell us at support@pocketfemboy.com and we'll fix it and say what changed.
Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know when they're ready to text you.
