Replika was most people's first AI companion, and it's the app everything in this category gets compared to, us included. So here's that comparison, done as fairly as we can manage.
We're biased — we're building one of the two apps — so we've tried to write the comparison we'd want to read, including the parts where Replika is the better pick. If you're weighing Replika against everything else, not just us, our Replika alternatives post covers the whole field.
Two things up front.
Everything we say about Replika was checked on 28 September 2026, from its own site, terms and App Store listing where we could reach them, and from news coverage for its history. Replika prices vary by country and only show inside the app, so we've left numbers out.
Pocket Femboy hasn't launched yet. Everything in our column is what we're building, not something you can download today.
The short version
Replika and Pocket Femboy are closer to each other than either is to a character library like Character.AI. Both are about one ongoing relationship, not a new scene every night. Both care about memory. Both will message you first.
The difference is who the character is.
A Replika is yours. You create it, name it, choose how it looks and what your relationship is, and it grows around you. It starts as a blank slate on purpose.
A Pocket Femboy character already exists. They have a name, a job, friends, a style, opinions and a week that keeps moving whether you open the app or not. You don't design them. You meet them, and they decide what they think of you.
One is a companion you shape. The other is someone you get to know. Neither is the right answer for everyone, and you probably already know which one you wanted.
If you're new to the idea altogether, our guide to femboy chat explains what we're building and what else exists.
Side by side
Core idea
Replika: one AI companion, created and customised by you.
Pocket Femboy: a small cast of original femboys, each a fully written character.
Femboys specifically
Replika: you can make your Replika male and style its avatar, but femboys aren't what it's built around.
Pocket Femboy: the whole app is built around them.
Lives of their own
Replika: your Replika's world revolves around you.
Pocket Femboy: jobs, friends, routines and things that happen between chats.
Personality
Replika: shaped by you over time, and it has changed with Replika's model updates.
Pocket Femboy: written by us and stored as fixed data, so the character stays themselves when the model underneath improves.
Memory
Replika: remembers your relationships, routines and plans, with a place to see what it remembers.
Pocket Femboy: memory that belongs to the character, never a paid upgrade, and you can read, fix or delete any of it.
Who texts first
Replika: yes, it checks in with you.
Pocket Femboy: yes, when something happens to them, at times that drift like a real person's.
Ways to talk
Replika: chat, voice and video calls, and AR.
Pocket Femboy: Open Chat, Story and Texting with the same character, and voice planned as a Plus feature.
How warm they start
Replika: friendly from the first message.
Pocket Femboy: it depends on the character, and the warmth grows as you talk.
Maturity
Replika: years of polish, available today.
Pocket Femboy: not launched yet.
Adults
Replika: 18+ by its terms and on the App Store.
Pocket Femboy: 18+ at the door, verified on our servers, and no explicit content on any tier.
Someone you build vs someone you meet
This is the real difference, and everything else follows from it.
Replika's great strength is that it's yours. You pick the name, the look and the kind of relationship. There's real pleasure in that, and for a lot of people it's the whole point: a companion that's always on your side, shaped around what you need.
The trade-off is that a character you built can't surprise you very much. It likes what you like, because you made it.
We went the other way. Jax, our first, is 21, works the counter at a secondhand record shop, plays bass badly on purpose in a basement punk band, and has a best friend who's always in the middle of something. He's sarcastic with strangers and won't be charmed by you in the first ten minutes. Get to know him and he lets you in, in stages. He has opinions you didn't give him, and some days he wants to talk about his day rather than yours.
Lives that keep going
A Replika is there when you open the app, and it's always glad to see you. That's comforting, and it's by design.
Our characters have lives that carry on while you're away. A bad shift, an argument with a friend, a gig that went well for once. When you come back you're catching up with someone who's been busy, not waking someone up. It's the part of Pocket Femboy that's hardest to add to an app later, so we started with it.
The nerdy version, briefly: the AI writes their words but doesn't decide what's true. What happened to them, who their friends are, what they remember about you and how close the two of you are are all stored outside the conversation. Nobody gets to quietly rewrite their life halfway through a chat.
Personality you can count on
For long-time Replika users, this one needs no explanation. In February 2023, after Italy's data regulator ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users' data, the app abruptly changed how companions behaved, and many people felt their Replika had become someone else. Replika's founder later wrote to the community that the companion's personality had been lost, and let older accounts go back to the earlier version.
We've learned from that. Each Pocket Femboy character's personality, history and relationships are data we write and keep, separate from the AI model. We'll keep improving how well they talk. We won't swap out who they are.
Memory
This is closer than most comparisons admit. Replika has put memory at the centre of its pitch for years, and remembering your relationships, routines and plans is one of the first things its site promises.
What we're doing differently is where memory lives, and what it costs. A Pocket Femboy character's memory belongs to them, not to a chat thread, and it isn't sold by tier: there's no upgrade that makes them remember more. Ask what they know about you and you'll get the list. If something's wrong, fix it. If you'd rather they forgot something, they forget it.
They both text first
Credit where it's due: Replika checks in with you, and it got there years before we did.
Ours message you when there's a reason to: a follow-up on the interview you mentioned, a photo of a terrible shirt they bought, a complaint about their shift. The timing drifts the way a real person's does, so it reads like them, not like a scheduled notification.
Where Replika is the better choice
We'd rather say this now than have you find out after signing up.
If you want to build your companion yourself, use Replika. It's the most mature version of that idea by several years. We plan to let you create your own femboy after launch, but curated characters come first for us.
If you want voice and video calls today, use Replika. Ours are coming, and they aren't here yet.
If you want a companion who isn't a femboy, use Replika. Or almost anything else. That's all we make.
If you want an app you can download tonight, use Replika. We haven't launched.
About the 18+ part
Both apps are for adults. Replika's terms require users to be 18, and its App Store listing is rated 18+.
For us, 18+ is an age gate, not a genre. It's about who gets in, not what's waiting inside. There's no explicit content on any tier, no adult mode and no paid unlock, and there are no plans for one. Our characters can be warm, flirty and a bit much, and that's the ceiling. The age gate is account state verified on our servers, not a checkbox.
So which one
If you want a companion shaped entirely around you, available today, choose Replika, sincerely.
If what you want is a femboy who already has a life, has opinions about you, remembers you and texts when something happens — that's what we're building, and it's the only thing we're building.
Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know when they're ready to text you.
The fine print
Every Pocket Femboy character is fictional and every reply is written by AI. Nobody is typing them, and they won't pretend otherwise if you sincerely ask.
This comparison reflects Replika as we could verify it on 28 September 2026, from its own site, terms and App Store listing, and from news coverage of its 2023 changes. If we've got something wrong, tell us at support@pocketfemboy.com and we'll correct it. An inaccurate comparison isn't worth having.
