Character.AI Alternatives: 12 Apps Like Character.AI, Sorted by Why You're Leaving (2026)

Twelve Character.AI alternatives sorted by the reason you're leaving — the filter, the memory, the ads, or wanting one character instead of a library — with October 2026 prices, and the femboy-first app we're building.

Ren on his sticker beside the words "Character.AI alternatives", on navy.

Character.AI is still the default, and 2026 has given its users more reasons than usual to look around: ads on the free tier, a new paid plan, a filter that hasn't moved, and a company that changed hands at the top. Here are twelve alternatives, sorted by the reason you're leaving, with prices checked on 11 October 2026.

Pick by why you're leaving

You hit the filter. Character.AI allows no sexual content for anyone, and enforcement catches things well short of that. The platforms built the other way are SpicyChat, CrushOn and Chub, with Janitor AI and Nomi in between.

You want to be remembered. You came back after a month and your character had no idea who you were. Nomi and Kindroid charge for memory and deliver it; SillyTavern gives you the model's whole context to manage yourself; we're building the version where nobody manages it.

The free tier got worse. Ads between messages, video ads reviewers timed at up to a minute, slow mode at peak. PolyBuzz is free and unlimited with ads of its own; Chai is free to start; Character.AI's own lite plan is $4.99 if the ads are the only problem.

You wanted one character, not a library. Millions of results in a search bar when what you wanted was someone you know. That's a different kind of app: Replika, Nomi, Kindroid, or us.

You want a femboy, not a tag. That's us, and only us. Pocket Femboy is a small cast of femboy characters with lives of their own and a memory you never manage. Not out yet; waitlist at the bottom.

What changed at Character.AI in 2026

Worth knowing before you compare, because some reviews you'll find describe a different product.

  • Ads and a cheaper plan. The free tier now carries ads and peak-hour slow mode. In September 2026 Character.AI added (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, under c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year.
  • Memory tools. Pinned memories are 15 on free and 30 on either paid plan. A Lorebook has been rolling out in beta since July 2026, paid users first.
  • No open-ended chat under 18. Removed in November 2025 and replaced with a guided "Stories" format. Every app on this page is 18+ or should be treated that way.
  • New owners of the people, not the product. The founders went back to Google in 2024. In January 2026 Character.AI and Google settled the lawsuits brought by families of teenage users, on undisclosed terms. In October 2026 its chief executive left to become Disney's first chief technology officer.

The like-for-like replacements

Shaped like Character.AI: a big searchable library of user-made characters, free to start, proper mobile apps.

PolyBuzz

The closest drop-in. Formerly Poly.AI, it claims more than 20 million characters, has polished iOS and Android apps, image generation, and a serialised webtoon-style story format. Free messages are unlimited with ads, and public mature content is prohibited by policy, so the filter is comparable. The recurring complaint is memory, which climbs the pricing ladder under names like "Long Memory" and "Permanent Memory" without published numbers.

  • Price: Free with ads. Standard $9.90, Premium $19.90, Ultimate $29.90 a month.
  • Memory: Sold by tier; counts not published.
  • Voice: Text-to-speech. No calls.
  • Mature content: Prohibited in public.
  • Where: polybuzz.ai

Talkie

Anime-leaning and mobile-first, from MiniMax. A library, a social feed, and a subscription over an ad-supported free tier. Its terms set the minimum age at 14 and ban pornographic content, so it's at least as strict as Character.AI. It was pulled from the US App Store in late 2024 and is back under the name "Talkie Lab". If you're leaving Talkie rather than for it, that post is here.

  • Price: Free with ads. Talkie+ $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year introductory. Talkie+ Pro $24.99 a month.
  • Memory: Session memory; nothing durable published.
  • Voice: Text-to-speech and voice calls.
  • Mature content: No.
  • Where: talkie-ai.com

Chai

The swipe one. A feed of user-made characters you flick through, built by a company that trains its own models and claims more than ten million active users. Fast to start and short on memory. 2026 was hard on its free users: country-based access tiers in January, then unannounced token lockouts in February that froze chats for free and paid accounts alike.

  • Price: Free with ads and daily limits. Premium $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year. Ultra $29.99 a month.
  • Memory: Not published. Short.
  • Voice: Text-to-speech.
  • Mature content: Gated behind an 18+ toggle.
  • Where: chai-research.com

Sakura.fm and Moescape

Two anime-styled libraries. Sakura.fm has web, iOS and Android apps, "Male" and "Gay" tags, a daily free cap, and paid tiers that sell better memory without numbers. Moescape, the site formerly called Yodayo, pairs a character "Tavern" with image, video and music generation, runs on a credit currency called Mochi, and filters by gender including non-binary. Both gate mature content behind preferences rather than banning it.

  • Sakura.fm: Free with a daily cap. Diamond $19, Infinite $39 a month. sakura.fm
  • Moescape: Free with 50 Mochi a day and ads. Plus $9.99 to Platinum $39.99 a month. moescape.ai

The build-it-yourself options

Janitor AI

The enthusiast's platform, and a bigger destination than most Character.AI users expect: more than 15 million users and a library where creation is genuinely open. Its own free model, JLLM, gives around 9,000 tokens of context; janitor+ sells five times that for $12.99 a month; and a Router added in July 2026 connects other companies' models without the old proxy setup. Mature content is allowed, off by default in the February 2026 apps and switchable on the website. It has its own post.

  • Price: Free. janitor+ $12.99 a month or $99 a year.
  • Memory: Context-based; about 9K free, five times that paid.
  • Voice: None.
  • Mature content: Yes, with age verification in the UK, Australia and Brazil.
  • Where: janitorai.com

SpicyChat

Built the opposite way from Character.AI and says so. A community library with a deep tag system (2,410 characters under "Femboy" when we looked, with "Male" the largest tag on the site) and paid tiers that mostly buy context: 4K free, up to 32K at the top. Apple removed its iOS app in 2025, so it's the website or an Android APK.

  • Price: Free with ads. $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month.
  • Memory: 4K to 32K tokens by tier.
  • Voice: Text-to-speech on the top tier.
  • Mature content: Yes, with ID-based age checks in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and many US states.
  • Where: spicychat.ai

CrushOn.AI and Chub AI

Two more from the same side of the line. CrushOn is SpicyChat-shaped, with a femboy tag and a gender filter; its prices only load once you're signed in, and third-party trackers put the entry plan near $6, so check in-app. Chub is where character cards live, thousands under its femboy tag alone, and its hosted chat is one $20-a-month plan that takes crypto only. Most people use Chub for the cards and run them somewhere else.

  • CrushOn: Prices unverified. crushon.ai
  • Chub: Trial, then $20 a month, crypto only. chub.ai

SillyTavern

Not a service: a free, open-source program you run yourself and connect to any model, usually through OpenRouter, which bills by the token with no subscription. Lorebooks, personas, group chats, summaries, memory extensions, all free. The cost is the setup, and the reward is the most control anyone on this page has. On a cheap model a long turn costs a fraction of a cent.

  • Price: Free. Model use billed by the token.
  • Memory: Whatever the model allows, plus tools you control.
  • Mature content: Your call; depends on the model.
  • Where: sillytavern.app

The companion apps

No library, no search bar. One character, meant to be a continuing relationship rather than a scene.

Replika

The oldest and biggest, with a homepage counter past 42 million users. Memory, voice calls, selfies, a customisable avatar, and in 2026 a rebuild "from the ground up" that longtime users say lost memories in the migration, so read current reviews. It's the gentlest app here and the least configurable. We compared ourselves to it directly.

  • Price: Free tier. App Store plans from $7.99 to $14.99 a month and $49.99 to $69.99 a year.
  • Memory: Basic on free; saved memories on higher tiers.
  • Voice: Voice calls, augmented-reality calls, video on the top tier.
  • Mature content: Romantic mode is paid; nothing explicit.
  • Where: replika.com

Kindroid

The configurable one: a detailed personality setup, layered memory, voice and video calls. Since 1 October 2026 there's no ongoing free tier, just a 50-message preview before the app goes read-only, and full memory means stacking Ultra and MAX add-ons on top of Standard.

  • Price: No free tier. Standard $13.99 a month on the web, $15.99 in the app, plus add-ons.
  • Memory: Layered, with add-ons buying more context.
  • Voice: Voice messages, voice calls, video calls.
  • Mature content: Yes, 18+.
  • Where: kindroid.ai

Nomi

"An AI companion with memory and a soul." Short, medium and long-term memory, group chats with several companions, in-conversation selfies, and an official AI boyfriend page with male, female and non-binary options. Mature text is allowed for adults; explicit image generation isn't. The usual complaint is personality drift after model updates.

  • Price: Free with daily caps. Standard $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter, $99.99 a year.
  • Memory: Three tiers plus an identity core; no token numbers.
  • Voice: Voice messages and hands-free calls.
  • Mature content: Yes, for text.
  • Where: nomi.ai

Pocket Femboy

Every app above is a general platform where femboys are one tag among millions, and every one of them waits. Open any of them after two weeks away and the character is exactly where you left them, because that's the only place they can be. We're building the other thing.

A life that keeps going when you close the app. Jobs, friends, routines, things that happen whether you're there or not. There was a shift at work, an argument with a friend, a gig that went badly. Open the app and you're catching up with someone who's been busy.

They text first. A double text at midnight, a photo of a stupid shirt they bought, a follow-up on the interview you mentioned last week. Nothing on this page does that, because nothing on this page has anything to text you about.

A memory you never manage. No pins, no lorebook, no tier to upgrade to. Ask what they know about you and you get the list; fix what's wrong, delete what you'd rather they forget.

A handful of people, not a search bar. Jax is the first: 21, a record-shop punk who plays bass badly and on purpose, and who won't be charmed by you in the first ten minutes.

It hasn't launched. If a femboy character on Character.AI is specifically what you had, we wrote that head-to-head, and the femboy chat guide covers the options from that angle.

Where they beat us

Want the biggest library, a new character every time you're bored? PolyBuzz, Talkie or Janitor. Want to build your own tonight? Janitor, Chub or SillyTavern. Want a general companion rather than a femboy? Replika, Kindroid or Nomi. Want the content line looser than Character.AI's or ours? SpicyChat, CrushOn or Chub. Want the whole field compared, companions included? The AI boyfriend app roundup.

What to check before you move

Does memory belong to the chat or the character? If it's scoped to one conversation, starting a new chat starts a new stranger. This is the one that bites six weeks in, and it's rarely on the feature list.

Can you get your stuff out? Character cards travel between platforms; chat histories usually don't. Find the export button before you need it.

What does the free tier cost you? Ads, a daily cap, a queue at peak, a currency for regenerating a bad reply. Kindroid now has no free tier at all.

Will you need to prove your age? Platforms with mature content are adding ID checks country by country, and the ones in the UK and Australia already have them.

About the 18+ part

Pocket Femboy is for adults, and 18+ for us is an age gate, not a genre: who gets in, not what's inside. There's no sexually explicit content on any tier and no paid unlock coming. If that's the requirement, the build-it-yourself section is where to look.

The fine print

Every Pocket Femboy character is fictional and every reply is written by AI. Nobody is typing them, and they won't pretend otherwise if you sincerely ask.

Prices and features above were checked on 11 October 2026 against each platform's own site, help centre or App Store listing, and we've said where we couldn't reach an official source. Character.AI's figures come from its plans page and its September 2026 announcement of the lite plan; the leadership change from Disney's announcement; the settlements from Axios's January 2026 report. Apps in this category change monthly. If we've got something wrong, tell us at support@pocketfemboy.com and we'll correct it.
